Literacy Night Shines Bright at Read Across America Event at Daegu Elementary School

DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA – Daegu Elementary School hosted its annual Read Across America Literacy Night, a vibrant celebration of reading that brought together teachers, students, parents, and volunteering soldiers, on March 7, 2025. Held at the school, the event aimed to inspire a love for literacy in both children and adults, creating a warm, community-driven atmosphere.
Teachers went above and beyond in their preparations, with some even dressing up as beloved book characters, while others embraced fun personas, including Elvis Presley, for the karaoke segment. The evening was filled with a variety of engaging activities designed to promote reading and spark excitement for literacy. Highlights included storytelling sessions, interactive reading games like Headband, face painting with favorite book characters, bracelet-making, a photo booth, sing-along karaoke, Korean calligraphy, block building, an escape room, bookmarks, a "Math with Dr. Seuss" activity, a Book Walk, and a book swap corner where participants could exchange their favorite books. The fire department also provided a safety demonstration, adding an informative and enjoyable touch to the evening.
“We need more of these events,” shared one parent. “They help encourage our children to develop a lifelong love for books.”
The event drew nearly 300 families, and more than 100 books were exchanged at the book swap corner, reflecting the community's enthusiasm for reading. Parents and educators were full of praise for the event’s ability to unite the community and emphasize the importance of literacy.
“It’s so nice to see so many people come out and support Literacy Night,” said Ms. Magoon, the school’s information specialist.
The success of the event was made possible through strong partnerships with local organizations. The USO, Navy Federal, the fire department, Girl Scouts, volunteering soldiers from the BOSS Program, and the Provost Marshal from the Area IV Command lent their support. NJHS students from Daegu Middle High School also played a vital role, hosting activity booths and reading stories to younger students and their families.
The Read Across America initiative, spearheaded by Daegu Elementary School, continues to encourage students to cultivate a passion for reading through a variety of programs and events. Literacy Night has become an essential part of this mission, offering both fun and educational experiences for all involved.
As the evening came to a close, participants reluctantly left, many with smiles on their faces and new books in hand, eager to continue their reading journeys. The event’s success is a testament to the community’s commitment to fostering literacy and supporting education.
