STEAM Week

DAEGU – Daegu Elementary School recently celebrated its second annual STEAM week, which culminated in an exhilarating STEAM Night on Thursday, May 2. The family event drew more than 200 attendees, including students and their family members, faculty, and community members.

Attendees were amazed at the variety of hands-on learning experiences available thanks to DES’ faculty, office staff, middle and high school volunteers, USO, and other community members who participated in this magnificent event, strengthening partnerships with our community. Exciting activities that unfolded during this educational event included:

  • Coding Adventures: students were introduced to the fascinating world of coding using Ozobots and Bee Bots.
  • Face Painting: talented volunteers transformed eager participants into colorful works of art.
  • 3D Printing Showcase: 3D-printed samples and demonstrations wowed visitors.
  • Toy Engineering: students used their creativity to construct toys using various materials.
  • Math Bingo: mathematical skills were honed with this time-honored game.
  • Potting Plants: a true green thumb hands-on experience of making your own water or soil-based plant.
  • Simple Machines: participants got busy exploring the mechanics of gears, axles, wheels, and other forms of movement.
  • Science Experiments: explosive and intriguing experiments captivated guests.
  • Graduating Innovators: our graduating 5th graders showed their impressive STEAM skills with various poster presentations.
  • Pet Rocks: a plethora of faculty, parent and community volunteers helped students to bring to life their own pet rock.

“STEAM night provided families the opportunity to connect with engaging and fun activities with their children,” said Ms. Angie Vernau, Pacific West Science ISS.  “I witnessed smiles on parent and kid faces all night long!”

Additionally, the school has inaugurated a STEAM after-school club, which received overwhelming interest, leading to an innovative restructuring to accommodate the participation of more than 50 students. The enthusiasm for these extracurricular and family-oriented events is evidence to the community's eagerness to embrace a richer, more interactive educational experience.

Many thanks to the community members whose contributions made this year's STEAM Night and week a remarkable success! DES is excited to offer more school events, fostering a sense of normality and community spirit. It's essential that we persist in strengthening our ability to engage with and embrace our students, families, and community members as part of our DES school family.
