Celebrating Social-Emotional Learning Spirit Week at Daegu Elementary School
In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, Daegu Elementary School at Camp George, Korea launched Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) spirit week to support children's academic success, mental health, and well-being during the week of September 23, 2024.
To celebrate Mindfulness Monday, DES students participated in mindful morning stretching and exercise on the field, led by the base commander, Col. David F. Henning.
On Tie-Dye Tuesday, students wore tie-dye shirts to represent a range of emotions. They also participated in Zones of Regulation activities in class to identify what “color” zone they were in.
On Wellness Wednesday, students learned that mental well-being is connected to physical health. Students were encouraged to get some extra movement that fuels the brain by engaging in various activities such as dancing, taking a bike ride, practicing yoga, etc.
On Thankful Thursday, students were provided a special gratitude sticker and had an opportunity to write thank you notes to someone in their life. In addition, the clinical staff from Camp Walker Behavioral Health visited the 4th and 5th graders. Each grade level received SEL lessons highlighting mental health and participated in the Q&A session.
On Feel Good Friday/Fill Your Bucket Friday, students wore their favorite “feel good” outfits and learned about what it means to be a “bucket filler” during counseling guidance lessons. Students were encouraged to participate in bucket-filling activities – listen to a favorite song, hug a loved one, have a family movie night, and volunteer their time.
In addition, for each day of the SEL week, DES school psychologist, Jennie Song, and the school counselors, Christopher Fletcher and Laura Davis, created short SEL videos for the morning announcements.
